In the US, brands can’t make statements that state they’re “all vegan,” and they’re prohibited from making any vegan-friendly claims.
That’s why there’s such confusion around what is vegan or not, said the Food and Drug Administration’s deputy commissioner for nutrition, Celeste O’Malley.
There are plenty of vegan-safe foods on the market, but a majority of the consumer research we’re doing on the topic shows that vegan-vegan consumers are more likely to be in the minority.
O’Malley said the FDA will be looking at the science behind the statements that vegan consumers make, and will consider the impact that a brand’s statement has on the consumer’s health.
